There are audiobooks you casually listen to while going about your day.
Then there are audiobooks that have you pausing in the middle of folding a towel because one of the characters has said something that requires your full attention.
Friend, I Got You is giving me the second experience.
July’s In My Ear This Month selection is I Got You by Miss Jenesequa, narrated by Nia Serge and Jakobi Diem. I chose this one because I wanted a Black romance that would keep me entertained, give me characters with real personalities, and add a little grown-folks drama to my quiet reading routine.
And clearly, this audiobook understood the assignment.

Why This Audiobook?
Let’s be honest: sometimes I choose an audiobook because the storyline sounds meaningful and emotional.
Sometimes I choose one because the narrators caught my attention.
And sometimes the description gives me one tiny hint of a protective man who knows exactly what he wants, and suddenly the book is sitting comfortably in my library.
This selection may have involved a little bit of all three.
I was looking for a story that could hold my attention during the everyday moments when I wanted to read but could not physically sit down with my Kindle. I wanted romance, emotional depth, believable chemistry, and characters who came into the story with full lives of their own.
Jordana and Genesis sounded like they were about to give me exactly that.
They are both successful, independent, and perfectly capable of handling life without a relationship. Naturally, this means romance arrives and starts rearranging all the emotional furniture.
Because love never knocks politely and waits to be invited in. It usually walks through the door, changes the thermostat, and starts asking why you have so many walls around your heart.
A Spoiler-Free Listen-In
Jordana Evans has built a life that works for her.
She is successful, confident, and protective of the peace she fought to create. She is not sitting around waiting for a relationship to make her life complete. Romance might be nice, but it is not something she believes she needs.
Genesis Washington is equally focused on his own priorities. His energy is going toward his family and the business he has worked to build. A serious relationship is not exactly sitting at the top of his carefully organized to-do list.
Then Jordana and Genesis cross paths.
What begins as an attraction neither of them planned for starts becoming more difficult to keep casual. Genesis knows what he wants, Jordana knows why she needs to be careful, and feelings begin ignoring every boundary they attempted to establish.
Meanwhile, old emotional wounds and family complications are waiting nearby like, “Oh, y’all thought this was going to be simple?”
The story follows two strong people trying to decide whether their connection is worth lowering their defenses, trusting someone new, and making room for a love neither of them expected.
That is all I am telling you because we keep things spoiler-free over here.
Just know that the chemistry arrives early, the emotions do not stay neatly contained, and the family business is definitely familying.
The Narration
An audiobook can have an excellent story, but the narrators are the ones responsible for making me forget that somebody is sitting in a recording booth reading it to me.
Nia Serge and Jakobi Diem make Jordana and Genesis feel like two distinct people instead of two voices simply taking turns telling the same story.
Nia gives Jordana the confidence, independence, and emotional caution her character needs. You can hear that Jordana is not afraid of love because she is cold or incapable of feeling. She is careful because she understands what it costs to rebuild your peace after life has disturbed it.
There is a difference.
Jakobi gives Genesis the grounded, assured energy of a man who is not interested in playing guessing games once he decides what he wants.
And friend, Genesis is very clear.
He is not wandering around wondering whether he likes Jordana. He is not asking three friends, two cousins, and a podcast host to help him identify his feelings. He sees the woman. He wants the woman. He begins making that everybody’s situation.
We love decisiveness in this reading lounge.
Together, the narrators create the kind of back-and-forth that makes the romantic tension feel natural. The alternating perspectives also allow me to hear what both characters are thinking, which is especially entertaining when one person is trying to act unaffected while the other has already figured out exactly what is happening.
What Works Especially Well in Audio
The biggest advantage of listening to I Got You is being able to experience Jordana and Genesis as two separate voices.
Romance can hit differently in audio when both characters are given space to tell their side of the story. I am not just hearing what Jordana thinks Genesis means. I also get to hear Genesis explain what he means.
And sometimes the difference between those two things is where all the entertainment lives.
The duel narration adds more personality to their conversations, and romantic tension. A line that might look simple on the page can sound completely different when the narrator adds a pause, a change in tone, or just the right amount of attitude.
You know the kind of pause I mean.
The pause that says, “I heard what you said, but I also heard what you meant.”
Audio also works well for this story because there is more happening than the central romance. Jordana and Genesis have careers and family relationships that affect how they respond to each other.
Listening allows me to settle into their world gradually instead of rushing straight toward the romantic payoff.
Although, let me be honest, I am still very interested in the romantic payoff.
I believe in emotional development, but I am also nosy.
Both things can be true.
Best Listened to While…
This is a good audiobook for:
- A long drive when you need something more entertaining than your usual playlist
- Cleaning the house while pretending you are not listening for the drama
- Taking a quiet walk with your headphones on
- Working on a creative project that does not require intense concentration
- Relaxing during a slow weekend
- Sitting somewhere comfortable with a drink and absolutely no intention of being productive
At just over 12 hours, this is not a tiny audiobook you will finish during one quick grocery run. It gives the characters and their relationship time to develop.
However, this is not necessarily background noise either.
There will be moments when you realize you have stopped cleaning and are now standing in the middle of the room listening.
The laundry will survive.
Finish the chapter.
Who Should Give This Audiobook a Try?
I would recommend I Got You to readers who enjoy:
- Black romance with grown characters
- A confident, protective male lead
- A strong heroine who values her independence
- Dual narration
- Emotional healing mixed with romantic chemistry

And Genesis?
Let’s just say that man did not arrive carrying uncertain energy.
He came with a plan.
Jordana may not have approved the plan, participated in the planning meeting, or even known that a plan existed… but Genesis was prepared.
Final Listening Thoughts
I Got You is the kind of audiobook I choose when I want my romance to feel mature without becoming boring.
Jordana and Genesis are not waiting for adulthood to begin. They have careers, family obligations… past experiences… emotional baggage… and of course established routines. Their challenge is figuring out how another person fits into lives that are already full.
That makes their connection more interesting to me.
This story is not simply about whether two people are attracted to each other. That part becomes obvious fairly quickly. The bigger question is whether attraction can grow into something secure when one person is used to protecting her peace and the other is determined to show her that she does not have to carry everything alone.
The audiobook format makes that emotional push and pull even easier to settle into. Nia Serge and Jakobi Diem bring different textures to Jordana and Genesis, helping their personalities, intentions, and growing connection come through clearly.
Would I suggest adding this audiobook to your listening list?
Yes.
Especially when you need a romance that can keep you company for several days, give you characters to root for, and occasionally make you speak directly to your headphones.
Because apparently I am part of the relationship now.
